- The need for a new class room at Chevannes Basic School was brought to the club’s attention by one of our former SLP Club Presidents, Yanique DaCosta, who sits on the Board of the Chevannes Basic School.
- The Club during its onsite visit to the school concurred that additional space was necessary to alleviate the overcrowding in the classroom. The school had only one room that facilitated over 100 children & 6 teachers. In addition to the needed classroom, renovation of the playground had to be part of the project, as the equipment was worn and badly in need of repairs. The total project took over 11months to be completed. The process included various meetings with key persons and regular visits to the school. A 40 foot container was donated by Tankweld Limited, who supplied the majority of the labour as well as building materials for the project. The Kiwanis Foundation of Jamaica donated the sum of US$1000 to this project which was used to purchase needed computer equipment for the new classroom.
- The landscaping of the school yard and artwork on the classroom were done by the Club members in conjunction with our SLP members from the VTDI Circle K Club. In addition the club sourced and donated food for the school’s feeding programme, children’s books, tables, chairs, & teaching aids. This Major Project was completed at a cost of One Million Six Hundred Thousand Jamaican Dollars (J$1.64 million). The club is very grateful to Tankweld, Kiwanis Foundation of Jamaica, community members, our Circle Kers and our own members without whom this project would not have been a success. Our Club members once again affirm that education of our youths is the key to breaking the cycle of poverty that exists in the world, as a good education offers change. Anything that can be done to advance this view must take priority.
